Why home batteries matter—and when they may not suit your home

Solar generation and household demand often happen at different times. Batteries can help bridge that gap, giving households another way to use available energy. Their value should be assessed against a specific need, not a claim that every home requires one.

Use energy at another time

A battery can store available solar for later use. This may be useful for households with evening consumption, depending on surplus generation, usable capacity, tariff rates and operating losses. It does not create extra solar energy or guarantee complete independence from the grid.

Backup needs deliberate design

Ordinary grid-connected solar generally shuts down during a grid outage for safety. A battery only provides backup where the equipment supports it and the installation is configured for it. Ask which circuits are backed up, the available output, reserve settings and whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage.

Whole-home backup and selected-circuit backup are different proposals. Large air conditioners, electric cooking, pumps and EV chargers require particular attention. Never assume a battery’s capacity label proves it can run every appliance.

When to pause before buying

Consider whether daytime self-consumption changes could meet your goals first. A household with little surplus solar or limited evening demand may need a different approach. Check switchboard space, installation location, compatibility and the full quote before committing.

Get a clear handover

Request operating instructions, warranty documents, monitoring access and a written description of backup limitations. Keep the agreed scope so future service enquiries can identify the system and its intended operation.
